What is broad-spectrum CBD oil? Characteristics and for whom it is indicated

You're thinking of trying CBD oil, but when you decide to buy one, you realize it's not as simple as you thought.

Because it turns out that there isn't just one type of CBD oil, but several. And among so many variants, which one are you supposed to buy?

In this post, we'll clarify. We're going to tell you about one of the most widely used types of oil: broad-spectrum.

Want to know more? Then pay attention, we're starting the explanation.

➡️ Broad-spectrum CBD oil: what it is and how it differs from other types of oil

To explain this, we first need to clarify some basic concepts.

✅ 1. What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a product extracted from the cannabis plant (specifically, from the resin produced by its flowers).

This oil contains different compounds naturally present in cannabis, including:

  • Terpenes (the substances responsible for producing the aroma of the flowers).
  • Phytocannabinoids (another type of plant substance that has the ability to interact with the receptors in our nervous system).

And among the latter, we have the famous CBD or cannabidiol, a phytocannabinoid with many properties.

✅ 2. And what does it mean for a CBD oil to be "broad-spectrum"?

The "spectrum" of CBD oil tells us how many of the cannabis components it contains. Thus, we have:

    • Full-spectrum CBD oil: which retains all the components we've seen; and yes, it also has THC (but in a concentration of less than 0.2%, so it doesn't produce psychoactive effects).
    • Broad-spectrum CBD oil: the star of this post. A type of oil that retains CBD and terpenes, but no trace of THC (0%).
    • CBD isolate: a type of oil that only contains cannabidiol, but no terpenes or THC.

In other words, broad-spectrum CBD oil is one that has been purified to completely eliminate THC.

✅ 3. Is it good for CBD oil not to contain THC?

The answer isn't so simple, and that's because there's what's known as the "entourage effect," a reaction in which all components interact with each other and complement each other synergistically.

This means that THC and terpenes interact with CBD to enhance its effects:

    • Anti-inflammatory.
    • Neuroprotective.
    • Analgesic.
    • Antiemetic.

So a full-spectrum oil will be more potent than a broad-spectrum one, and the latter, in turn, will have a greater effect than a CBD isolate oil.

➡️ So, why make a CBD oil without THC? 3 cases where broad-spectrum oil is beneficial

In broad-spectrum CBD oil, we lose part of the entourage effect (not entirely, because we still have the terpenes).

But there are cases where a person cannot tolerate even the maximum 0.2% THC allowed by law.

✅ 1. People with high sensitivity to THC

Some people, due to their genetics, are more sensitive to the effects of THC. These individuals can experience adverse reactions (from anxiety to panic or even paranoia) when consuming this phytocannabinoid.

It's unlikely this will happen when taking CBD oil, even full-spectrum. But if you have a very high sensitivity to THC and notice that the oil doesn't agree with you, you can switch to broad-spectrum.

✅ 2. People suffering from psychiatric problems

This point is closely linked to the previous one, as patients who suffer from problems such as schizophrenia or psychosis should avoid consuming THC.

This substance produces psychoactive effects and can trigger attacks or worsen the symptoms of these disorders.

Again, it's unlikely this will happen if you take it in a full-spectrum CBD oil (because the concentration is minimal), but it's better not to take risks.

✅ 3. People who are going to undergo a drug test

Drug tests detect a metabolite called "THC-COOH" which our body produces when we consume THC. This metabolite can remain in the body for several days.

If you take CBD oil regularly and in high amounts, there is a risk (it's very small, but it exists) that you will test positive for THC in a drug test. Therefore, if you are going to undergo one (for example, if you are an athlete and are going to compete), it is preferable to take broad-spectrum CBD oil.

Drug tests do not detect CBD, so it is a completely safe substance.

➡️ How can CBD oil be used?

Throughout this post, we have discussed the general use of CBD oil. However, keep in mind that each country has specific legislation regarding the permitted uses of CBD:

    • In countries like Germany or Switzerland: cannabidiol is considered a food product, meaning it can be ingested. The only restriction is that its THC level must not exceed the 0.2% established by European regulations.
    • In Spain: in our country, the legislation is more conservative, and for now, CBD oil is only permitted for topical use (although it is completely legal to buy it). In addition, it is also mandatory to comply with the 0.2% THC limit.

In our catalog, you will find oils with different CBD concentrations that comply with these regulations.
