Can CBD cause addiction? Here's what science says
Many people ask this question when they first hear about cannabidiol. We know it has multiple properties, but since it comes from the cannabis plant, isn't it dangerous?
Couldn't it be addictive?
To clear up your doubts, we have this post. Here, we will explain:
- How CBD works.
- What science says about CBD addiction.
- Its main contraindications.
But let us tell you one thing: if you are considering starting to take CBD, know that you have nothing to fear.

➡️ Let's start by understanding how CBD works
First of all, it's important to understand how CBD works in our body (we'll explain it in a very simple way, we promise).
The cannabis plant has a series of chemical compounds called "phytocannabinoids." CBD is one of them.
These phytocannabinoids are very similar to neurotransmitters that our body naturally produces, which are called "cannabinoids."
What does that mean?
It means that phytocannabinoids are capable of interacting with the receptors in our nervous system and regulating their activity. And one of the most studied phytocannabinoids has properties that are:
- Anxiolytic.
- Analgesic.
- Relaxing (which is why it's used to combat insomnia).
- Neuroprotective.
- And many more.
Now, if CBD interacts with the nervous system, can that cause addiction problems?
➡️ Does CBD cause addiction?
As we mentioned, CBD is a substance that has been extensively studied. Even, the WHO issued a report praising the therapeutic properties of this cannabinoid. One of the conclusions of this report was that CBD cannot be "misused," because it does not generate:
- Dependence.
- Tolerance.
Let us explain the differences.
✅ 1. CBD does not cause dependence
Can you get "hooked" on CBD if you take too much?
The answer is no.
Dependence is what we normally call "addiction": your body gets used to receiving a certain substance, and every so often it asks for more. And if you don't give it to your body, the famous "withdrawal syndrome" occurs.
This is what happens with alcohol, with tobacco...
But CBD does not have this effect.
Even if you use it for years, your body will not develop dependence.
So no, CBD is not addictive. ;)
✅ 2. CBD does not cause tolerance
Do you usually drink coffee? If so, you may have noticed that over time it "stops having an effect." You increasingly need to drink more, or switch to a stronger coffee, to feel as awake.
This is called "tolerance": your body "adapts" to that dose of caffeine, and to feel the same effects you have to increase it. It also happens with alcohol, for example.

➡️ Now you know that CBD does not cause addiction, so how will you use it?
You have several options available to enjoy the properties of CBD:
- You can use it in oil form.
- Or buy CBD buds to enjoy their relaxing aroma.
The important thing is to make sure that the CBD products you buy do not contain THC.
At CogolloCBD.es, all our products have a certificate from European laboratories that guarantees they are safe products with THC levels below the legal limit (0.2%).
This gives you the peace of mind that you are buying a safe and quality product. Now that you know: welcome to the world of CBD.
Be CBD, my friend.
