Two recent scientific studies have shed light on the reasons why industrial hemp becomes a magnet for bees and other pollinators. Its main appeal lies in the abundant pollen production offered by these plants.
A notable study, titled "The bee community of Cannabis sativa and the effects on landscape composition," analyzed the relationship between hemp plantations and bee populations. The results revealed that areas with larger extensions of industrial hemp significantly attracted a higher number of bees.
Furthermore, this research demonstrated a surprising finding: taller hemp plants were up to 17 times more attractive to pollinators compared to smaller plants.
This data is particularly relevant, considering that industrial hemp, unlike many other pollinator-attracting plants, does not produce nectar. Instead of nectar, it is the large quantities of pollen produced by male hemp plants that are irresistibly attractive to bees, providing them with essential protein-rich food.

Beyond its ability to attract pollinators, industrial hemp presents another crucial advantage: its late flowering cycle, extending well into autumn.
While most wild plants and agricultural crops finish flowering during the summer, industrial hemp continues to flower and produce pollen in autumn. This makes it a vital food source for bees during a critical time of year, when other pollen sources are scarce.
This characteristic makes industrial hemp an exceptionally valuable option for filling seasonal gaps in food availability and ensuring the survival of pollinator populations, especially at the end of the season when other crops are declining and climatic conditions may be more adverse.
