Grinder: what it is and what it's for

What does this English term, which we come across so often in the cannabis world, refer to? Grinders are a fundamental tool for hemp consumers.

It is a simple device, but it will make your life much easier and can serve multiple purposes. Do you want to know which ones? We'll tell you.

➡️ What is a grinder and what is it for?

If instead of "grinder" we said "shredder" or "chopper", you would already know what we are talking about, wouldn't you?

A grinder is a hemp mill (but it sounds cooler in English, right?). So, when a person says "to grind", they mean they are grinding a cannabis bud.

✅ But do I really need a grinder?

While you can certainly break up your buds by hand, using a grinder has its advantages.

The first is convenience.

A good quality bud has a hard and resinous consistency. Therefore, if you try to break it up using scissors or your hands, it would take a lot of time (and you would end up with all the resin stuck to you).

On the other hand, using a grinder has these advantages:

  • It's much easier and faster.
  • The bud breaks up more homogeneously (so the flavor is distributed throughout the joint and it burns more evenly).
  • Less resin is wasted, and you can even recover some of the resin that sticks to the grinder when you roll the next joint.

And, as you know, it is this resin that concentrates most of the cannabinoids we are interested in (especially if we are looking to enjoy CBD).

➡️ Types of grinders you can find

The grinder seems like a very, very simple tool (and it is!).

In fact, the most basic models are just two hollow pieces with spikes that break up the bud. But even so, you can find dozens of different models, depending on:

  • The size: the most common measurements are 30 mm, 42 mm, 50 mm, 55 mm, and 62 mm.
  • The shape: cylindrical, spherical, square, grinding cards, camouflaged. The latter are grinders that imitate other everyday objects to go unnoticed, like the famous "grinder watch". ;)
  • The material: you can also find plastic, wood, metal, or aluminum grinders. Metal ones are the most resistant and last the longest, although they are considerably heavier than the others.
  • The mechanism: the most common are manual (we explain how they work below). You also have crank grinders similar to coffee grinders, or even electric grinders.
  • The number of parts it comprises: two-part, three-part, or four-part.

This last division is probably one of the most important.

Two-part grinders are the cheapest and have only one compartment for grinding the bud. This means that the herb will not be as fine as if you ground it with a grinder with more parts.

The four-part grinder, in fact, is also called a pollinator. This type has an extra compartment, separated by a fine mesh, where the dust or kief that comes off the buds when grinding them accumulates. The advantage of this type of grinder is that with the leftover dust you can make your own hash.

And homemade grinders?

It's true that some people choose to make their own grinders, using caps (or similar objects) to which they attach nails or spikes.

However, these homemade grinders will never grind a bud as well as one made by a professional.

➡️ How a grinder works step by step

Grinding a bud with a grinder is very simple. You just have to follow these steps:

  1. Place your bud in the hollow between the two parts of the grinder.
  2. Close it.
  3. Rotate the pieces in opposite directions. By doing this movement, the spikes will cross and break up the hemp into small pieces.
  4. Finally, remove the ground herb and enjoy.

It is very important that the buds you use are dry.

Also make sure you have removed all the stems from the bud before putting it in the grinder. Also note that near the edges of the grinder, it grinds better than in the center, so put the buds there.

✅ Keys to cleaning a grinder

To ensure your grinder continues to work well, remember to clean it regularly, because accumulated resin will make it increasingly difficult to turn.

The easiest way to clean it is to put it in the freezer so that the resin hardens. Then, you just have to scrape the spikes of the grinder with a stiff bristle brush or a knife.

It's best to do it over a piece of paper so you can collect that valuable resin and use it later. ;)

You can also clean it with alcohol, although this cleaning method is only recommended if it is a metal grinder.

➡️ And you, do you prefer to use a grinder or do it all manually?

You've seen how easy and quick it can be to roll a joint with a hand grinder. But be careful! There's a very important detail you need to keep in mind.

Whether you prefer to do it all manually or with a grinder, it is essential that you use good buds. Not even the most expensive grinder on the market can save a joint made from a bud with poor flavor and little resin.

In our bud catalog, you will only find high-quality CBD flowers. You can choose the flavor you like best here.
